COVID-19 Day 41: Let Them Eat Cake with Chocolate Ice Cream

“Let them eat cake.” -Marrie Antoinette (Probably)

At the start of the French Revolution, Queen Marrie Antoinette was rumored to have said, “Qu’ils mangent de la brioche”—“Let them eat cake.” when told that her people had no bread. This tale was ‘fake news’, told as justification for the violent revolution and the Reign of Terror that was its aftermath. I never understood how any ‘ruler’ could offer such callous words until now.

In a tone-deaf attempt at light comedy, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi appeared on CBS’s “Late, Late Show” to share how she was “holding-up” during the COVID-19 lockdown. She humblebraged, by showing off her $24,000 freezer full of $12/pint ice cream that she had delivered. Outside of her home in San Francisco, the Small-Business Loan fund has dried up, millions are out of work and wonder how they’re going to pay rent, and thousands wait in foodbank lines because they’ve run out of money to buy food.

These “How I’m Coping” vlogs posted by politicians, journalists, and celebrities, show how truly out of touch the Ruling Class are during this pandemic. Most still work, get a paycheck, have food and luxuries delivered by assistants, while telling the Common People to sacrifice for the common good. Here’s a suggestion, Congressmen and Senators should voluntarily donate their salaries and pantries to food banks during the COVID19 pandemic. There’s nothing like an empty stomach to focus the mind.

If our leaders continue to live in their bubble of Italian gelato, others may resurrect a French invention, le guillotine.
