COVID-19 Day 74: Freedom is always worth the risk.
Today, Memorial Day, we honor the soldiers who died protecting our freedoms. COVID-19 has been compared to WWII to describe our existential threat and the need for collective sacrifice. It’s also been humorously used to belittle those bemoaning being ‘stuck-at-home’ during the lockdown. I would argue that we haven’t been treating coronavirus enough like a…

COVID-19 Day 72: Reopen or Shelter-In-Place? Yes.
For almost 8 weeks, most of the US was closed due to COVID-19 with over 30 million citizens forced out of work due to the closure of most businesses. Since the start of May, many states in the US are re-opening their business with the hope people will be able to return to jobs. There…

COVID-19 Day 69: Why Cloth Masks Work Better Than You Think
This graphics is used by some to claim that cloth masks are ineffective in stopping the spread of COVID-19 or most viruses. Similar memes claim that even N95 masks can’t filter out particles smaller than 0.3 microns in size and coronavirus are 0.1 microns in size. Both claims are wrong because they fail to understand some…

COVID-19 Day 68: A Safer Treatment Than Hydroxychloroquine
Despite early hopes by President Trump and Chinese researchers, chloroquine, and its less toxic derivative hydroxychloroquine, has disappointed as a cure for COVID-19. At high doses, hydroxychloroquine has caused dangerous heart arrhythmia (irregular heart rhythm) which could easily kill a critical patient, clinging to life, intubated in an ICU. Patients with moderate-to-severe symptoms are less at risk of death due to…
